Speech and Debate is a class and club that is designed to prepare students for competitive speaking and debating. Its goal is to improve students’ skills in speaking, listening, composing, and reasoning through practical experiences and applications, especially during scheduled competitions.

Students will develop skills in Cross Examination, Public Forum, and Lincoln-Douglas debating as well as oral performances such as oral interpretations, extemporaneous speaking, congressional debating and speaking, and original oratories. Students become interested in current issues, develop sound critical thinking, and sharpen communication skills. They will acquire life-long skills for intelligently approaching controversial issues and clashes of opinion.

Students do not have to be in the class to be in the club or compete; however, it is highly recommended due to the skills needed to be successful in competition. In addition, students do not have to compete to be in the club or course.

Architecture + Design Club

The Architecture + Design Club is sponsored by Mr. Bradley.

Scholarship Opportunity:

TCHS Architecture + Design Students are eligible to apply for a scholarship their senior year.

2020 Architecture + Design Scholarship Application

On February 28, members of the CAD club as well as students enrolled in Architecture classes made a series of site visits to Galveston.

The students researched and explored different building materials that have been implemented on various contemporary architecture projects. The students were able to examine the causes of Galveston’s climate and explain the effects of materials as they relate to the climatic conditions of Galveston Island.

CAD Club and Architecture students were given a tour by Mrs. Chula Ross Sanchez, who designed a series of three post-Ike casitas.

Business Professionals of America

Business Professionals of America (BPA) is sponsored by Ms. Smalley-Jackson.

BPA is a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) that is co-curricular with Business Education.

Cosmetology

Cosmetology is the art and science of beautifying and improving the hair, skin, nails and also involves the application of cosmetics. This is a two year program offered to Juniors and Seniors while attending High school. Upon completion of the program the students can receive their Cosmetology license and immediately go to work.

The Salon at TCHS Public Hours:
Thursdays and Fridays from 11:30-1:30.

During this time our students use their training skills under the supervision of their cosmetology Instructor to provide services to clients.

Services available: Manicures, Pedicures, Brow waxing, Highlighting, Facials and Haircuts.

Future Farmers of America

Future Farmers of America Shooting Team

The FFA Shooting Team is predicated on being an FFA member. The shooting team is an activity offer through FFA, competing in shooting Trap and Sporting Clays.

The purpose of the FFA Shooting Team is to develop a passion within students for shooting sports and firearms by establishing a tradition of safe, educated, ethical and passionate sportsmen and women that appreciate the outdoors, exercise their second amendment rights and are competitive shooters.

Meeting Times:
Meetings are held the first Monday of every month at 6:30pm in room G108A at TCHS.

Practice Time:
Practice time is every Thursday from 3:00pm-4:30pm at the Texas City Municipal Gun Range.

The Texas Association of Future Teachers is an extension of the Ready, Set, Teach! program at TCHS.

The TCHS Theatre Department is under the direction of Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Hazzard. The Theatre Department produces three plays and one musical per year. All students at TCHS are invited to auditions throughout the year; enrollement in a Theatre class is not required.

Thespian Troupe 1354 is an international Theatre honor society. Meetings are held every other Thursday at 3:30pm in the Black Box (H105). Thespians is sponsored by Mrs. Davis.

Future Problem Solvers (FPS)

FPS helps to develop the thinking skills our students need to adapt to their ever-changing world. It is interdisciplinary; it can be incorporated into virtually any content area or into an elective course. Throughout the process, students use the higher-level thinking skills of synthesis, analysis and evaluation. It meets and exceeds the STAAR objectives in almost all subject areas. It is an International Interscholastic Academic Competition. Its mission is to develop the ability of young people globally to design and achieve positive futures through problem solving using critical and creative thinking. It is a fun and challenging program for students to experience!

History

FPSPI is a dynamic international program involving thousands of students annually from around the world. Developed in 1974 by creativity pioneer Dr. E. Paul Torrance, Future Problem Solving (FPS) provides competitive and non-competitive components for today’s curriculum via a six-step model which teaches critical and creative thinking, problem solving, and decision making.

Students compete in several components against public schools, private schools, and home schooled students.

The State Bowl will be held in San Marcos on April 12-14.

Green Stings

Genders & Sexualities Alliance

A GSA club is a student-run club in a high school or middle school that brings together LGBTQI+ and straight students to support each other, provide a safe place to socialize, and create a platform to fight for racial, gender, LGBTQ, and economic justice. "GSA" has historically stood for Gay-Straight Alliance, however many clubs have expanded the name of their clubs beyond the binary Gay-Straight terminology. The Interact Club is sponsored by Mrs. Tholcken.

Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 14 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting.

Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of

Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others
Understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work
Advancing international understanding and goodwill

As one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, with more than 10,700 clubs in 109 countries and geographical areas, Interact has become a worldwide phenomenon. Almost 200,000 young people are involved in Interact.

Qualifications to become a member:
Must pay dues of $10.00 per year and attend at least 60% of the meetings or activities.

Project 7

Project 7 (P7) is a free resource for students to utilize for the purpose of starting Bible Clubs on their High School campus. P7 Clubs are student-led and student-driven opportunities for students to participate in a spiritually inspired, relationship-oriented, community-serving project within TCHS. Any student interested in joining our P7 Club, must make the pledge to be a P7 missionary! The greatest project you could ever work on is within the seven years of secondary school--a project that leads to completion in Christ!

We accomplish our mission by:

Equipping and empowering students to be leaders within TCHS as P7 missionaries.
Encouraging youth pastors to disciple, inspire, and persuade our students to unlock their faith within TCHS.
Expressing the mission, purpose, vision, rights, and core values to school administrators.
Evangelizing TCHS campus through P7 Bible Clubs.

Redefining Beautiful

Redefining Beautiful is a student club meant to empower girls to resist stereotypes based on appearance and to empower young me to treat girls with respect and act as gentlemen.

It is a girls and boys club that encourages natural beauty and God's gift to embrace their inner beauty rather than what is on the outside. Girls celebrate natural beauty and self-confidence. Boys celebrate being gentlemen and learning how to treat girls in today's society.

Redefining Beautiful:

Encourages girls to share their stories.
Encourages boys to treat girls with respect.
Post anonymous encouraging messages in public places for other women and girls to find along with boys doing the same to help each other learn how to be gentlemen.
Entertain speakers at meetings.

Meeting Times:
Meetings will be held on the 2nd or 3rd Wednesday of the month throughout the school year.

Dues:
Dues are $10.00, due by the second month of school.

Attendance Requirements:

Must attend at least 7 meetings to be able to wear a cord their senior year.
Absent forms must be filled out and signed for an excuse absence (i.e., playing a sport, teacher requested, illness from school, etc.)

The Senior Steering Committee works together to orchestrate and plan the details for the senior Prom. They also make graduation decisions, invitations, class quote, and class song.

Student Council

Student Council is a student led organization which organizes campus activities such as, Homecoming and Freshman Orientation. The Student Council is very active with community service events including Special Olympics, School Supply Drives, and Relay for Life.
